Happy Holidays

Posted by Appomattox on November 20, 2005

Happy Thanksgiving! (later this week) Also, let me say merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah in advance since my posts are rather infrequent.

Quake 4 was released last month. It takes either a monster computer or a supremely tweaked-out config to be playable. So far I've relied on the latter approach. However, I may upgrade soon since it's been 2 years. For those needing help, this is my config: download. Although a resolution of 640x480 qualifies as legally blind on some maps (especially with the 110 fov I'm using), I seem to rail as well as I did in Quake 3. The game itself feels like a deliberate Quake 3-Doom 3 hybrid. There's a lot that I like about Quake 4--mainly because the gameplay is almost identical to Quake 3. The physics are excellent. When players are hit by projectiles they move in much more sophisticated ways than in Quake 3. The most frustrating thing about the multiplayer is simply the fact that so few people seem to play it. There are tons of empty servers. I can only assume that it's partially a result of the extremely demanding hardware requirements. For team games such as CTF the colors of the two teams seriously need to be rethought. I can't even count the number of times I've shot my own flag carrier because the giant, glowing flag is the enemy's color. Orange and green? Who thinks these things up? Use some common sense, bring back the red and blue, please.

After getting Q4, I bought a new mouse, the 2000 dpi Razer Copperhead, and a new mouse pad, the Razer eXactMat. I highly recommend both. The eXactMat is essentially a func pad with a better base and larger surface area. The Copperhead is easily the best optical mouse I've ever had.

As I write this, a tv-movie remake of the Poseidon Adventure is airing on NBC. Though I've only seen the first 10 minutes, this could very well be one of the worst things to ever air on television. It's rare that such bad acting, poor production values, and cheesy dialogue all coalesce into a single work. Just so you know, a theatrical remake titled simply "Poseidon," is being released next year and should be vastly superior to this piece of garbage. One film stars Steve Guttenberg and C. Thomas Howell. The other stars Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss. You do the math.

In other news, I've been accepted to a few medical schools located in Philadelphia, St. Louis and Milwaukee. It's still too soon to predict where I'll end up. I'm still waiting to hear from many schools.

End of Summer

Posted by Appomattox on September 8, 2005

So I hear Quake 4 is progressing but no word on when it will be out. I spent most of my summer writing silly essays for the ~30 medical schools I applied to. I have 5 interviews lined up so far, all over the country. In other news, my keyboard broke last week so I went to CompUSA to get a new one. Why is it that Logitech has to change the friggin configuration of the pgdn, pgup, home, end, insert, etc. between the main keyboard and the numpad?!?! ARGH! Why do people have to insist on being so darn "innovative." I did like the diNovo keyboard but it's too expensive and they should have left it in one piece.

Had to Update Forum... ugh

Posted by Appomattox on July 1, 2005

Well, I got this email from my web provider saying that I needed to update my phpBB stuff in 24 hours or they would disable it due to security concerns. So, I did but all the XD site integration was lost. In order to fix it I need to hunt through the files to manually reinsert the code... lame. I don't know when I'll work up the energy to fix that since practically no one uses our forum but the forum itself still functions just fine. It merely looks hideous.

XD Polling System Implemented

Yes, this is the day you've all been waiting for. You can now participate in our XD poll (see right column) covering the most critical and compelling issues of our time.

Discussion Forum Fixed, XD E-Mail Forwarding Available

Posted by Appomattox on May 22, 2005

Ok, apparently it was easier to get things fixed than I at first realized. I thought I was going to lose the database and have to start over but everything seems to be working. Enjoy!

I also uploaded ALL of ours demos (nearly half a gigabyte). They can be accessed via the matches page (click the tournament, then stats for the specific match, then see right column) or by sifting through the demos directory.

By the way, if anyone would like an extremedomination.net E-mail address for forwarding then just ask me.

Happy 8 Year Anniversary XD!!!

Posted by Appomattox on May 21, 2005

It was 8 years ago, in May 1997, that our clan was formed. Yes, admittedly, it's been several years of idling in IRC now but most people have kept in touch even though we don't play anything competitively anymore. Go read our history if you're feeling nostalgic.

New Web Host, No More Hosting Off My DSL

Posted by Appomattox on May 21, 2005

Well, I couldn't afford to pay for my speakeasy SDSL anymore so I had to cancel it. Therefore I also had to find a new web hosting solution. Although I won't have as much control over the server, it should run a lot faster. The forum may be down for a while. The host that I chose does have phpBB support built in so I should be able to figure it out but I'm a little busy lately. Only a few people were actually posting messages but there were many more people viewing the posts so... go figure.

Ok, so I guess I was being lazy with the news updates. At first I thought I would post once a month after getting the site back up last fall... then I said ok, let's try to post something every 3 months... then I realized I waited too long and said, ok damn it, let's try biannually... and missed that too. Doh! Anyways, it's not like anyone missed anything. There was some Quake 4 news that trickled out recently but it's still quite a ways off. There was a video promo released for E3 but it just shows some cinematic garbage rather than actual gameplay.

Discussion Forum Added

Posted by Appomattox on September 5, 2004

We now have our very own professionalish-looking discussion forum which is linked at the top of the page. I remember that we had a short-lived discussion forum around 5 years ago but it was hosted elsewhere, and there was no customization permitted so it couldn't be fully integrated into our website. However, now that I'm doing the hosting there's a lot more flexibility so I decided to give phpBB a try. It was remarkably easy to get it initially set up and functioning but the graphical customization was really tricky because they spread their design out over so many shared files. I may continue to make some tweaks to the design but it's fully functional. Let me know if there are any problems with registering or posting.

Note: There may be some pages that break the design, such as the forum search feature but I don't know if I'm willing to hunt down every minor graphical glitch when all the substantive features work correctly.

Summer XD Roundup

Posted by Appomattox on September 4, 2004

Since practically none of us play computer games regularly anymore and I have nothing else to talk about I thought I should mention what other people have been up to lately. I got an email from Kaluminati a few days ago. He's been in southern Texas doing Mormon missionary work in Spanish-speaking border towns for the past two years. He says he'll have more regular computer access in October. Puar recently finished his summer internship at Mattel and is continuing on in the toy design program at Otis College of Art + Design. I've been working on a second bachelors degree in biology and will be applying to medical school next year. I believe that Stud graduated not too long ago with a degree in computer engineering. Some people have dropped off the face of the earth. Others mosey on into IRC every few weeks or months. If anyone else has any personal news to share, let me know. =D

Fixed Counter

Posted by Appomattox on August 27, 2004

I redid the counter at the bottom of the page using a short php script. I did have to change the extension on the index file from shtml to php so if you bookmarked the actual file "index.shtml" you are going to have to change it.

Demos Linked

Posted by Appomattox on August 22, 2004

All the demos are linked but as mentioned in previous news post there is limited bandwidth. I don't expect this to be a problem in the long run since there shouldn't be overwhelming demand for 3 to 7 year old quake demos but I'd encourage anyone interested to download them in the daytime rather than at night if possible since it's conceivable I may want to play some q3 in what little free time I have. =]

News!!!

Posted by Appomattox on August 21, 2004

Hmm, so apparently I haven't made a news update since September of 2002, and the website has been down for almost a year... doh!. I'm going to try and just host this site on my linux box off of my dsl connection under the assumption that overall page requests should be low. I don't have enormous bandwidth but as long as 10 people at a time aren't accessing the site there shouldn't be a problem. I also need to fix a few minor glitches.

Anywho, Doom 3 was released earlier this month. It's the first computer game I've purchased since Quake III Arena five years ago. It's not ideal for multiplayer gaming but the graphics engine is revolutionary. The rocket launcher is clearly the best weapon in the game. Unfortunately, some of the other weapons are downright lame (*cough* plasma). They're fun in the single-player game but in multiplayer they seem WAY too slow. I like the light switches, shadows and flashlights. They add another dimension to 3D Shooter gameplay but ultimately Doom 3 is clearly NOTHING like quake. I'm definitely not a fan of the ridiculous weapon reloading garbage, designed to slow the pace of the game. After playing for a couple of weeks I doubt I'll be playing the multiplayer too extensively--There just isn't enough there. The single-player game really is AMAZING but unfortunately I just don't get much enjoyment out of that kind of thing anymore. Unless I know I'm playing against real people I can't really force myself to care. Quake 4 is being developed using the doom 3 graphics engine, and should yield a much more enjoyable multiplayer experience. Regardless, I probably won't have much time to play anyway. Just about everyone in our clan is consumed with "real life" obligations.
